39th Lake Burley Griffin Race Walking Carnival, 12 June 2005, Canberra
The annual Lake Burley Griffin Carnival is held each June in Canberra, the capital of Australia. This is the main event for Racewalking Australia and has a strong team emphasis. The carnival this year involved nearly 300 walkers of all ages. There are Racewalking Australia championship events for age groups from Under 10 through to Masters. The carnival also includes the Australian Under 20 Mens 10000m Road Walking Championship.
The 20 mile race is held on the Sunday morning on a tough hilly course around the lake while the other Championship events are held on the Sunday afternoon. All events are road events.
Once again a Peter Waddell Memorial walk was held on the Saturday afternoon from Western Park. This informal tribute to Peter, held in miserable wet conditions, still attracted a good number of walkers from all States and was a fitting remembrance to Peter, the driving force behind this Carnival.
